About the Word & Character Counter

This tool counts your text as you type. Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, blank lines and unique words all update live, along with an estimate of how long the text takes to read silently or out loud.

It is useful whenever a limit applies: an essay word count, a character-limited bio or post, a talk that has to fit a time slot.

What you can do

  • Count words and characters, with and without spaces.
  • Count sentences, paragraphs, lines and blank lines.
  • See how many of the words are unique.
  • Estimate reading time at 225 words per minute.
  • Estimate speaking time at 130 words per minute.

How to use the Word & Character Counter

  1. 1Type or paste your text into the box.
  2. 2Read the live counts under it. Everything updates on every keystroke.
  3. 3Use the reading and speaking estimates to judge length for an article or a talk.

How the counting works

Words and sentences are counted with proper text segmentation rather than by splitting on spaces, so contractions like "isn't" count as one word and an abbreviation's period does not end a sentence. A paragraph is a block of text separated by at least one blank line. Emoji and other special characters count as one character each.

The time estimates use common averages, 225 words per minute for silent reading and 130 for speaking. Real pace varies with the audience and the material, so treat them as a guide rather than a promise.
